The Swallows - Turning Blue | NORMALLY $21 - Last copy is only $11! "4 stars... When Turning Blue was released Glenn Milchem`s day job was holding the sticks for Canadian country-rock band Blue Rodeo, but this solo project shows Milchem`s other musical sides. With a few exceptions, everything on the album was played by Milchem, which leads to the album being a tiny bit stilted -- it`s almost impossible to multi-track with the same level of enthusiasm you get from dynamic band interaction. Still, it`s an album that disproves the oft-repeated myth that drummers aren`t as musically inclined as the rest: Milchem draws on a variety of influences, from The Beatles to his punky roots in the Canadian scene, all very effectively. "-AMG. The CD hangs in a few different places and showcases moody, melodic pop, juxtaposed with guitar-driven rock anarchy. Turning Blue ranges from low-fi heartbreak songs (Exist) to all-out raging noise rock (Example). With shades of Beck and Blue Rodeo (naturally), it`s intelligent, engaging music. Never underestimate the drummer is the lesson here. Turning Blue is a much tougher, darker, harder disc than BR would ever put out. Having said all that, I believe Turning Blue transcends the side project niche and arrives fully formed and not really comparable to BR at all. It`s much more comparable to the spectacular Gomez discs.
